I have a regular rope halter but does the one you guys are talking about have knots in it. The one I have has metal holding it together not knots so this really isn't the right kind of rope halter is it. Is it still better than a nylon one when lunging. When people talk about a rope halter giving you more control because of the pressure points?
Any rope halter will apply more pressure to your horse's face than a nylon web halter. Try putting a nylon halter on your leg and pull. Feel the pressure? Next put a rope halter and pull on your leg with the same strength. The narrow rope will concetrate the pressure to a much smaller spot, and you will definetely feel a difference.
The natural horseman rope halters have knots to intensify that feel even more. But they are also alot more expensive. I would expect you could use your basic rope halter and be quite happy with it without buying another.
And yes, I do use a rope halter for lunging a horse that I think is going to be silly, or pull against me. There are disadvantages to lunging with a rope halter, though. For one thing, they often slide and twist. And you can't snap to the side rings of the halter, like you might with a nylon web halter. So for a calmer horse I prefer a nylon web halter for lunging, for the young, goofy ones I stick with rope halters. When people talk about a rope halter giving you more control because of the pressure points?
The rope halters I like best are made of yachting rope and have no metal parts. Yachting rope is very pliable and resilient, but extremely strong. Mine are only knotted at necessary points, meaning there are no extra knots to create pressure points. I have incredible control with these halters. The round small diameter of the rope is very effective in creating enough pressure for control. Mine attach to the lead with a loop, so there are also no metal clips to break there either. I only use rope halters and leads for training, since I find them to be superior and more versatile than flat nylon or leather halters.
WOW you got a JOHNSON halter? Don;t see them much anymore lol

Clinton Anderson and I think Pelham use the rope halters with knots in specific pressure points. They are usually hand tied with no metal.
