Control blood pressure - 140 down to 120?

I'm 59, 5' 8';, 170lbs. My blood pressure is 140 and the doc says it should be 120.

Can this be controlled with a low sodium diet or herbal remedies?

What are the consequences of not lowering to 120?Control blood pressure - 140 down to 120?
140 is definitely high, by today's new standards. High blood pressure evenutally leads to hardening of the arteries, which can then lead to clogged arteries and stroke. First try to get it under control naturally without resorting to prescription drugs. Add a ton of fiber to your diet. Lay off the salt. And I don't just mean the salt shaker. Most of the salt we consume comes from processed (packaged) foods and eating out. Incorporate a lot of fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains into your diet. Try to go for a walk once a day. Start out short and slow, and gradually work up to a nice 30-60 minute walk. All these things will help get your BP under control. If these tactics don't work, you should then resort to prescription medications. You can find a lot of info on the web if you just search for ways to lower blood pressure naturally. 140 is borderline and chances are will slowing creep up. Exercise and diet will help you lower it and then you must continue the routine to maintain it. of course having high blood pressure will increase your risk of a stroke and several cardiac issues.
Yes, it can be controlled with low sodium and approved herbal remedies. You'll have to have it taken regularly to make sure it is staying down. If not than you'll need to go the conventional way and get meds, and stay on the low sodium diet.

Complications include heart disease, stroke, cardiovascular disease.
Consequences of high blood pressure: Stroke (HBP can cause a break in a weakened blood vessel and bleed into the brain), impaired vision (HBP can eventually squeeze or burst vessels in the eye), Arteries and Coronary-artery disease (HBP can stiffen the arteries and cause the heart and kidney to work together), Kidney Damage (HBP can narrow and thicken the blood vessels of the kidneys), Heart Attack (MAJOR risk factor. HBP can cause less oxygen to get to the lungs...and as we all know humans live off oxygen)

Solutions: Eat less sodium. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Fast food thickens the blood. Red wine helps raise HDL and can also thin the blood, but drink in moderation (1 glass a day for a woman, 2 for men) Arjuna strengthens circulation. Guggul lowers blood fat levels while raising HDL (good cholesterol) and garlic prevents blood clots. You can also take dietary supplments like fish oil, garlic, coenzyme Q10, Omega-3 fatty acids, you can also look for ones that have a heart on the bottle. Also, reduce stress. Napping is ok, it helps relax you and clams your body. Exercise on a regular basis even if you just walk the dog for a half hour.
can be controlled by exercising and a low sodium diet. Magnesium supplements can help.

Consequences of not controlling it - it will likely get worse as you get older and your arteries don't have as much plasticity as they used to. It can lead to organ damage, especially the kidneys. It means you have a higher likelihood of stroke and heart attack.

It's always best to try and lower it with diet and exercise first. But make sure you follow up with your doctor to keep a check on your blood pressure.

140 is not that high, not usually what doctors would put you on medication for unless there are other factors
ask your doctor to prescribe you some medication like lisinopril or something. and yes, les sodium.
What about your diastolic bp? the bottom reading.

you just need to have a good diet plan. Include a lot of Potassium rich food in your diet, like bananas and potatoes. Avoid too much Sodium and make sure that coffee doesn't raise your blood pressure. Some people are affected by coffee others are not. If you are overweight then lose that extra weight.

Exercise is also a great way to lower blood pressure, I think that you will need a small dose of medication if your blood pressure is always 140/80 or 140/85. BP is bad, it cause damage the heart - brain and arteries. Anyway, the damage is caused by very high blood pressure. Yours is not that high, but why take the risk? maybe with only 2.5mg of Norvasc your blood pressure will be 120/80.

Listen, there are many drug classes for treating BP and you can find a medicine that causes no side effects for you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck,

Good luck
regarding to your age, its enough to keep your BP 140, yes by low sodium diet, avoid stress.

because you 59 it may be difficult to lower to 120 ,

lowering to 130 or 135 enough to keep your BP within normal rang .

i think you dont need for any medication now.

there are no consequences. dont worry.
It just makes your heart pump harder when your blood pressure remains elevated and causes damage to your vessels. A low sodium diet would help but exercise would be a good way to reduce these numbers. A walking program is easiest - begin slow and gradually increase your distance and pace until you are walking 30 - 45 minutes per day at a brisk pace. If following a healthy diet and exercise do not work, then it is time to consider a blood pressure medication to prevent future problems.
Mine was 155/100 at one stage, and it is now down to 110/70. I took the following measures ( 10 years ago ) and within 6 weeks, I had achieved this result:

1. I walked at least 6 miles per day, 6 days per week. The first day, I had to be picked up after 1.5 miles - I was so tired! But gradually I built up fitness - it took a few weeks, but was worth it.

2. I cut out red meat, and ate fish only. I also ate very little animal fat. I also tried to eat 5 portions of fruit/veg per day - mainly veg as I'm not a great fruit eater. Soup was great at this time.

3. Within 10 weeks I had lost 20 lbs, and it has stayed off - I feel largely due to exercise, but diet helps too.

You could take medication, but I guarantee you will feel fantastic if you do it through exercise/diet............I know the medics say to cut down salt, and personally I don't use that much anyway, but I'm not sure that's enough. I also don't think herbs would work.

The consequences of not reducing your blood pressure are very serious. You risk damaging every body organ - its a silent killer......whilst the actions you can take to reduce it will benefit you in many ways, lowering heart rate, increasing fitness level, and releasing endorphins which make you feel great................
