The kidney must maintain a constant high glomerular filtration rate. If blood pressure falls too much, it is unable to maintain GFR and kidney failure can occur. Why is the kidney a major site of blood pressure control?
The kidney is used as a tool in maintaining a constant blood pressure seeing as this in turn is dependent on blood volume by varying the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), the blood volume can be varied thus changing the degree of re-absorption. This is done by various mechanisms such as through constriction of the afferent and efferent arterioles constriction. Decreased afferent and GFR increases, increased afferent - GFR decreases, Decreased efferent - GFR decreases, Increased Efferent GFR increases. Why is the kidney a major site of blood pressure control?
Because it secretes renin from the juxtoglomerular apparatus.
Renin - Angiotensin - Aldosterone pathway.
